Identification Process

At Stratton Schools, we strive to identify gifted and high-achieving students through a comprehensive and fair process. Our goal is to ensure that all students who demonstrate exceptional potential are recognized and provided with the appropriate opportunities for growth.

  • Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT): All students in 2nd and 6th grade will take the Cognitive Abilities Test, which helps to identify students' problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. This test is one of the key components used to assess potential for the Gifted and Talented Program.
  • District Assessments and Classroom Observation: Teachers and school staff assess students regularly through a combination of district assessments, classroom performance, and day-to-day observation. These insights help identify students who show advanced academic abilities or exceptional talent in various areas.
  • State Assessments: State-level assessments are also utilized to further evaluate students' academic achievement and help in the identification process.

Referral Process

We believe that every child has unique potential, and any student can be referred for consideration as gifted or high-achieving. Referrals to the Gifted Program can be made by:

  • Parents
  • Teachers
  • Community members
  • Students themselves

If you believe your child is gifted or high-achieving, we encourage you to submit a referral. The referral process is simple and can be initiated by contacting the Gifted and Talented Program Coordinators.Once a referral is received, the identification process will begin. The child will be assessed based on multiple factors, including test scores, classroom performance, and observations. You can find the referral form link on our website. Please make a copy of the form, fill it out either with or for your student in mind, and email the completed form to Miss Yacco and Mrs. Jostes. They will be in touch from there!

Identification Outcome

After the identification process is complete, parents will receive a formal letter notifying them of the results:

  • Gifted Identification: If your child is identified as Gifted, you will receive a letter informing you of this. Gifted students will be provided with opportunities to participate in advanced activities, specialized events, and unique learning experiences throughout the school year.
  • High-Achieving Students and Talent Pool: If your child is identified as high-achieving, they will be placed in the district Talent Pool and included on the watch list for potential future identification. This allows us to monitor their growth and consider them for future gifted programming.

Opportunities for Gifted and High-Achieving Students

Students who are identified as Gifted or who are part of the Talent Pool will be offered a range of exciting opportunities:

  • Collaborative Activities: Throughout the year, students will have the chance to participate in various activities with other gifted students from surrounding schools and districts, fostering collaboration, intellectual stimulation, and social interaction with peers of similar abilities.

  • Advanced Learning Events: Students will be invited to attend specialized workshops, academic events, and competitions designed to challenge their thinking and expand their interests in a variety of subjects.

  • Ongoing Support and Enrichment: We provide a supportive environment for gifted learners, ensuring they are appropriately challenged and engaged in their academic pursuits.
